GitLab Runner fails unless I am logged into gitlab-runner account GitLab CI CD
enero 27, 2023So it appears that ~5 seconds after logging out of gitlab-runner, the socket file is fully removed. Again, seems like expected behavior to me in a Podman environ. From there, as if I try to run that command from either my account or as root, you don’t see that in the output. But that I suspect is to be expected being a user-level service. For now all I have in the repo itself is a README.md and .gitlab-ci.yml file. And the contents of the latter are the default where it’s just a few stages that all pretty much just execute echo commands.
Issues will be in 2 places but code will be in 1 https://traderoom.info/gitlab-ci-vs-github-actions/ at least this way. You didn’t specify, what kind of developer are you? If you’re building software, you know how quickly the toolchain can get out of hand. You might be using one tool for your code repos, another for CI/CD, a third for tracking issues, and a handful more for security scans and project management. Also means when rebooting the server, it will also automatically run even if the user is not logged in. I’ve just done this, and now the user-level podman service/socket remains.
Not allowed to force push code to a protected branch
At this point, I’m strictly querying about free usage – not for paid accounts. On Windows, it should work by setting this to the wincred credential helper. The link also highlights that Git will use the Windows Credential Manager by default.
What is CoreWeave? A deep dive into the AI infrastructure giant
Figuring out the right one really depends on what your team needs for collaboration, security, and scale. These security features are a big part of the Ultimate tier, which is what makes GitLab a legitimate DevSecOps platform. GitLab’s big promise is to clean all that up by replacing the sprawling, complex setup with a single, unified DevSecOps platform. Now just to get GitLab to update their docs (or modify their .rpm to handle this for users).
- Projects one writes would be more visible and can potentially be seen by more users / developers too.
- This reduces complexity, cuts down on context switching, and streamlines workflows by managing everything from planning to deployment in one place.
- My intention is to use Podman vs. Docker on the RHEL8 box, so that is all installed and configured.
- If I have a repo in both locations, there might be issues and PR / MR from both places.
- For now all I have in the repo itself is a README.md and .gitlab-ci.yml file.
You made it very clear and I’ve been following the tutorial on setting up runners on my local device. In this case the code is still hosted on GitLab but I will run the pipelines on my local device which is a great solution for CI. Storage limits still apply and for some projects it is fine. I have found a lot over youtube and other pages but for gitlab.com which brought me a lot of problems as they were not working as it was trying to connect to gitlab.com. This GitLab overview suggests complementing GitLab with a specialized AI-powered internal assistant like eesel AI. This tool can unify scattered knowledge from sources like Confluence, Google Docs, and Slack, providing a single, intelligent source of truth for developers.
How to curl single file using deploy token
I was just looking for a way to do the same, but at the very least, you have not incorporated the deploy token username in your commands, which I expect would be compulsory. Still, I’ve had no success even when adding the deploy token username to the URL. Now those latter instructions appear to be if you install the GitLab Runner’s binary manually and intend to manage/update it yourself. I had used the repo approach so that updates would be performed during usual maintenance automatically.
Ship secure software, faster.
Here, I registered the executor as shell and planning to run an initial pipeline that set up the runner machines with all the required installations. Inform your team members about the branch name change, so everyone is aware and can update their local repositories accordingly. This does not help if you have merge requests pending from that branch, you’ll also need to delete the merge requests and create new ones which is not ideal. Simply renaming a branch in the remote would be great. Ready to help your development team get more done?
But it’s odd they should have the same sort of info twice, once as a link to a doc page, then as a button with a popup. As best as I can figure it, when GitLab Runner tickles the UNIX socket which should trigger bringing up the Podman service, it doesn’t. But if again, user gitlab-runner is logged into a shell (even doing nothing), then it all works. You might get prompted for username/password once on git clone . Add your username, and PAT (not your account password!) into the forms, when asked.
A complete GitLab overview for 2025: Features, pricing, and limitations
Please let me know any having knowledge about this. I had to Used this command git branch -m old branch name new branch name. I was deleting the remote branch in Gitlab via GUI and that was not helping.I tried deleting the remote branch by git on command line and it worked.
At least if that works, it will at least confirm that it’s user-specific and not for entirely the system. Unless of course it doesn’t work using the system-wide method as well. Now I have Google-fu’d my way to finding multiple references to this error, most of which were folks trying to simply use Docker with GitLab Runner and not Podman. So the fixes described (mostly making sure Docker was installed) don’t apply. I have previously written to this repository, but that was to the branch main, before the first version of the software was put into production. Evaluate your needs carefully and consider experimenting with both platforms to determine which aligns best with your workflow and objectives.
GitLab.com is a fully managed, SaaS offering hosted by GitLab, providing the fastest way to get started without maintenance worries. A self-managed GitLab instance gives you total control over your servers, security, and data, but requires you to handle updates and upkeep. GitLab integrates security directly into the CI/CD pipeline, shifting security «left» to catch vulnerabilities early in the process.
Use the enable-linger option for the service to remain on logout. But that gitlab-runner line I had to manually add into each file and do the math for the starting ID #. Some time ago, I wrote an article about authentication against Git repositories with JGit (a pure Java Git implementation). Now I am about to update a section about the authentication methods provided by GitLab and how they work. With GitLab, if you projects will be storage intensive then you will hit the 5GB limit pretty quickly. A potential new user here and I’m curious if I should make the switch to GitLab as a newbie developer.
The main thing to consider is whether its all-in-one model is the right fit, or if you’d rather build your own stack of specialized, best-in-class tools. While other platforms like Jenkins often make you rely on a complicated web of third-party plugins (that may or may not be kept up to date), GitLab built CI/CD right into its core. The whole configuration lives in a simple YAML file, .gitlab-ci.yml, inside each repository. In this GitLab overview, we’ll get into its core features, how it’s built, and what it costs. We’ll also look at the potential downsides of a «one-stop-shop,» especially when it comes to managing all the scattered knowledge your development team needs to get work done.

Seems that this setting is not configured in your Git client (anymore?). Thinking about Lorikeet AI for your customer support? In this detailed overview, we break down its action-oriented features, complex workflow capabilities, and opaque pricing model to help you decide if it’s the right fit for your team. You don’t need to be a systems architect to use GitLab, but understanding a little about how it works can help you see how it delivers that all-in-one service. While the full architecture is complex, a few key services do most of the work.
While GitLab organizes your code, let eesel AI organize your knowledge. See how our AI Internal Chat can unite your Confluence, Google Docs, and Slack into a powerful assistant that gives your developers the answers they need, right when they need them. GitLab is a top-tier choice for streamlining your core development work.
Only in general, make sure that it is indeed using that deploy key when doing git operations. There should be a private part of the key configured somewhere. The AI Internal Chat product is designed to solve this exact problem. It connects to all your company’s knowledge sources, including Confluence, Google Docs, Slack, and even your GitLab Wiki, to create a single source of truth.
Again, it feels like GitLab Runner simply isn’t starting up properly if GitLab triggers a CI/CD pipeline and that user isn’t logged in. You are both using deploy tokens, which are used for accessing the repository via git. They are basically some temporary access accounts for git. But reverting things back (as I’d really like to get this working properly at the user level), the behavior is same as before. If user gitlab-runner is simply not logged in, then pipelines fail.
The world of AI is powered by massive infrastructure, and CoreWeave is one of the key players providing the computational muscle. But what exactly do they do, and is it what your business needs to leverage AI? This is where a specialized tool can work alongside GitLab to create a much more productive environment. While GitLab is busy managing your code, an AI-powered internal assistant can manage your scattered knowledge. Just interesting that it didn’t match, as it makes me wonder what process that GitLab Runner .rpm is using to create the gitlab-runner account during installation. Then you will see /var/run/podman/podman.sock and I believe you could use this, no matter what the user.
You can’t deactivate pull requests, but that’s not a problem anyway. Unless you make an incredibly popular project, pull requests will be so rare it won’t bother you where they come from. Where GitLab vets open source projects manually (and annually), GitHub freely provides. Projects one writes would be more visible and can potentially be seen by more users / developers too. I had to Used this command git branch -m old branch name new branch name . In terminal its showing correct but its not updated in browser.
